Requesting an Academic Appeal Hearing

If you feel that you have in some way been disadvantaged during your studies and this is reflected in your results then you may have grounds for an Academic Appeal. Follow this guide to establish if you have grounds for appeal and what to do next. The Students’ Union Advice Service is able to offer support and advice on all aspects of the procedure.

The University will consider any request for an Academic Appeal submitted within the time frame stipulated. You are required to complete an Appeal Request form. The form can be downloaded from the University webpages via the Student Hub and searching ‘Academic Appeals’ or you can contact the Students' Union Advice Service and we can provide you with a copy.

Grounds for appeal

You will only be considered for an Appeal hearing if you are able to establish a case on at least one of four grounds:

  • Computational Error
  • Material Procedural & Administrative Error
  • Programme Management Deficiencies
  • Previously Undisclosed Extenuating Circumstances
Excluded matters

he University excludes Academic Appeals which question Academic Judgement.

Academic judgement is defined in this context as ”...the opinion about a piece of work that can only be given by an academic expert...”

This includes the marks awarded. You cannot appeal simply because you disagree with the tutors markup. You may still be able to make a case under one of the above grounds. If you are uncertain about the grounds of your Appeal please seek advice from the Students’ Union Advice Service.

Completing the form

The Appeals submission form is your only opportunity to make a case for an appeal hearing.

The adjudicators considering your Appeal will have no prior knowledge of your case or the circumstances surrounding it. It is important therefore, that you give a clear presentation of the facts and the chronology of events.

The Students’ Union Advice Service offers a draft form checking service. You can send your draft for review by email to suadvice@leedsbeckett.ac.uk. We will aim to get back to you with comment and feedback normally within 24hrs on a working day but during busier times this could take longer. Make sure you send any drafts to us for feedback well in advance of your deadline.

Important information

  • You can only submit a Request for an Appeal Hearing once your results have been confirmed by an Examination Committee/ Board of Examiners.
  • You have 15 working days from the day your results are available on ‘Results Online’ in which to submit your Request for an Appeal Hearing. If you feel you will be unable to submit within this time then we can advise you on how to seek an extension.
  • Following submission of your form you have a further 5 working days to submit your evidence but you should try to submit your evidence at the same time as you submit your appeal form.
  • The University aims to respond to your request for a hearing within 20 working days of receiving your form.

Awaiting Appeal Decision

If you have received your end of year results and find out that you may not be able to progress to the next Academic level, you may decide to submit an Academic Appeal. Depending on the date you submit your Appeal, you may find that there is a delay in receiving the outcome. There are no guarantees that you will be granted an Appeal hearing or that the Appeal Hearing will be upheld.

Plan Ahead!

By planning ahead you can minimise the impact of an unsuccessful Appeal outcome. Hopefully, you will be made aware of the outcome of your Appeal before the start of the new term. Even so, there are decisions that you might need to make in advance of receiving notification of your Appeal outcome:

Housing

If you have signed a Tenancy Contract for the next academic year and subsequently have to repeat/part repeat a year, you need to consider how you will pay your rent if you are not receiving student funding or are withdrawn from the University. You should seek advice on your tenancy agreement from the Students’ Union Advice Service.

Delay In Appeal Decision

If your results were that you should not progress/continue, you will not be able to formally enrol on the next level/repeat level until the outcome of your Appeal is decided.

Continuing Study

You will however, be given access to a timetable and the opportunity to attend lectures at the next level/repeat level. This is to avoid you being disadvantaged if your Appeal is successful.

Important information

The University aims to respond to your request for an Appeal Hearing within 20 days of receiving your submission. However, at busy times or if the case is very complex the time limit can be exceeded. We would urge you to follow-up your Appeals progress and to contact the Appeals’ Office for weekly updates once the 20 day deadline has passed.
